 CAREERS IN PATENTS

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT has issued over 8 million patents since it began awarding patents in 1790. In 2008 year the U.S. patent office issued over 180,000 patents. Many hundreds of thousands affecting commerce in the United States have issued overseas.

What this means is patents are surviving the greatest economic downturn since the depression. The reason for this is that invention fuels economies worldwide. Without invention modern civilization would come to a halt. Consequently, individuals and companies on the forefront of the world's technological progress will continue to invent and will need patent protection.

A major problem in the field of inventions concerns the shortage of qualified individuals to process the work. There are roughly 40,000 patent attorneys and patent agents in the U.S., not nearly enough for handling new applications and prosecuting patent applications before the patent office. Additionally,  the industry suffers from too few patent attorneys leading to a shortage of qualified individuals to lend their expertise to the formation and management of businesses built on technology. Patent professionals are highly paid because of their limited numbers and the expertise to accomplish the work.

Other positions are patent engineers or patent technicians who work closely with patent agents and patent attorneys, to not only augment the patent application process, as for example in litigation and independent resources because of their role as engineering specialists.
